Exclusive excerpt from Jessica Sorenson’s Breaking Nova!

bnToday I’m happy to share with you an exclusive excerpt from the amazing Jessica Sorenson’s upcoming book, Breaking Nova! (On sale from Grand Central Publishing on September 3rd).

Prologue

Nova

Sometimes I wonder if there are some memories the mind doesn’t want to deal with and that if it really wants to, it can block out the images, shut down, numb the pain connected to what we saw—what we didn’t want to see. If we allow it to, the numbness can drown out everything, even the spark of life inside us. And eventually the person we once were is nothing but a vanishing memory.

I didn’t always use to think this way. I used to have hope. I used to believe in things. Like when my father told me if I wanted something bad enough that I could make it happen.

“No one else in the world can make things happen for you, Nova,” he’d said while we were lying on our backs on the hill in our backyard, staring up at the stars. I was six and happy and a little naïve, eating his words up like handfuls of sugar. “But if you want something bad enough and are willing to work hard at it, then anything’s possible.”

“Anything?” I’d said, turning my head toward him. “Even if I want to be a princess?”

He smiled, looking genuinely happy. “Even a princess.”

I grinned, looking up at the sky, thinking how wonderful it would be to wear a diamond tiara on my head and a sparkly pink dress and matching heels. I would spin around in circles and laugh as my dress spun with me. Never once did I think about what it truly meant to be a princess and how impossible it was for me to actually become one.

“Earth to Nova.” My boyfriend, Landon Evans, waves his hand in front of my face.

I blink my gaze away from the stars and angle my head sideways along the bottom of the grassy hill in his backyard, looking him in the eyes. “What’s up?”

He laughs at me, but his smile looks unnatural, like it doesn’t belong there. But that’s normal for Landon. He’s an artist, and he tells me that in order to portray pain in his portraits he has to carry it within him all the time. “You were totally spacing off on me there.” The front porch light is on, and the fluorescent glow makes his honey-brown eyes look like the charcoal he uses for his sketchings.

I roll on my side and tuck my hands underneath my head, so I can really look at him. “Sorry, I was just thinking.”

“You have that look on your face, like you’re thinking deep.” He rotates on his hip and props his elbow up on the ground, resting his head against his palm. Wisps of his inky-black hair fall into his eyes. “Want to talk about it?”

I shake my head. “No, I don’t really feel like talking.”

He offers me a trivial but genuine smile, and the sadness in my mind fleetingly dissolves. It’s one of the things that I love about Landon. He’s the only person on this planet who can make me smile—except for my dad, but he’s no longer alive anymore, so smiles are rare in my book.

Landon and I were best friends up until about six months ago, and maybe that’s why he can make me happy. We got to bond on a deeper level and understand each other before all the kissing and hormones came along. I know we’re only eighteen and haven’t even graduated high school yet, but sometimes, when I’m alone in my room, I can picture him and me together years ahead, in love, maybe getting married. It’s surprising because for a long time after my dad died, I couldn’t picture my future—I didn’t want to. But things change. People evolve. Move on. Grow as new people enter their lives.

“I saw the picture you drew for the art project,” I say, brushing some of the hair out of his eyes. “It was hanging up on Mr. Felmon’s wall.”

He frowns, which he always does whenever we’re talking about his art. “Yeah, it didn’t turn out how I planned.”

“It seemed like you were sad when you were drawing it,” I tell him, lowering my hand to my hip. “But all your drawings do.”

Any happiness in his expression withers as he rolls onto his back and pinpoints his attention to the star-cut sky. He’s silent for a while and I turn onto my back, letting him be, knowing that he’s stuck in his own head. Landon is one of the saddest people I’ve met, and it’s part of what drew me to him.

I was thirteen, and he’d just moved in across the street from me. He was sitting against the tree in his front his yard, scribbling in a sketchbook, when I first saw him and decided to go over and introduce myself. It was right after my dad had died, and I’d pretty much kept my distance from people. But with Landon, I don’t know, there was just something about him.

I’d crossed the street, very curious about what he was drawing. When I stopped in front of him, he glanced up at me, and I was taken aback by how much anguish was in his honey-brown eyes—the torture and internal suffering. I’d never seen so much of it in anyone my age before, and even though I didn’t know what was causing it, I guessed we were going to be friends. He looked how I felt inside, like I’d been broken apart and the pieces hadn’t healed correctly. Just like I guessed, we did become best friends—more than best friends, actually. We’re almost inseparable, addicted to each other, and I absolutely hate being away from him because I feel lost and misplaced in the world whenever he’s gone.

“Do you ever get the feeling that we’re all just lost?” Landon utters, jerking me away from my thoughts again. “Just roaming around the earth, waiting around to die.”

I bite on my lip, considering what he said as I find Cassiopeia in the sky. “Is that what you really think?”

“I’m not sure,” he answers, and I turn my head, analyzing his perfect profile. “I sometimes wonder, though, what the point of life is.” He stops, and it feels like he’s waiting for me to say something.

“I’m not sure.” I rack my brain for something else to add. But I can’t think of a single coherent, reasonable response to his dark thoughts on the meaning of life, so I add, “I love you.”

“I love you too, Nova,” he promises without looking at me, then he reaches across the grass and grabs my hand, twining his fingers through mine. “And I mean that, Nova, no matter what. I love you.”

We get lost in the stillness of the night while we watch the stars glimmer and fade. It’s peaceful but unsettling at the same time, because I can’t turn my thoughts off. I worry about him when he gets depressed like this. It’s like he goes into his own little world that’s carved of gloomy thoughts and a blackened future, and I can’t reach him no matter how hard I try.

We lie quietly, watching the stars and holding on to each other. Eventually, I drift to sleep with my face pressed against the cool grass, the spring breeze chilly against my skin, and Landon’s fingers soothingly stroking the inside of my wrist. When I wake up again, all the stars have blended in with the grayness of morning, the moon is tucked away in the glow of daybreak, and the grass is damp with dew. The first thing I notice is that Landon’s hand is missing from mine, and it makes me feel empty, like one of my arms has been detached from my body.

I sit up, rubbing my eyes then stretching my arms above my head as I glance around the backyard, searching for Landon. The only thing I can think of is that he got up to go to the bathroom, because he would never leave me sleeping on the hill alone in his backyard.

I push to my feet and brush the grass off the back of my legs before hiking up the hill toward his two-story house at the top of the backyard. It seems like a really long walk, because I’m tired—it’s too early in the morning to be up. When I reach the back porch, I take my phone from my pocket to text Landon and see what he’s doing. But I notice the back door is cracked, and I find myself walking inside, which is a little out of character for me. It’s not like I’m used to walking into his house without being let in. I always knock, even when he texts me and tells me to come straight up to his room.

But this time, something begs my feet to step over the threshold. It’s cold inside the kitchen, and I wonder how long the back door has been open. Shivering, I wrap my arms around myself and cross the entryway to the kitchen. Landon’s parents are asleep upstairs, so I make sure to walk quietly, heading downstairs to Landon’s room, which is in the basement. The stairs creak underneath my shoes, and I hold my breath the entire way down, not sure what will happen if his parents wake up and catch me sneaking down to his room.

“Landon,” I whisper as I walk toward his bedroom. It’s dark, except for the spark of the sunlight through the windows. “Are you down here?”

Silence is the only answer, and I almost turn around and go back upstairs. But then I hear the lyrics of an unknown song playing softly from somewhere in the house. I head for his bedroom door, and the music gets louder.

“Landon,” I say as I approach his closed door, my nerves bubbling inside me. I don’t know why I feel nervous. Or maybe I do. Maybe I’ve known for a long time, but I never wanted to accept it.

My hand trembles as I turn the knob. When I push the door open, every single word Landon’s ever said to me suddenly makes sense to me. As the powerful lyrics playing from the stereo wrap around me, so does an undying chill. My hand falls lifeless to my side and I stand in the doorway, unblinking. I keep wishing for what I’m seeing to go away, to disappear from my mind, to erase the memories. I wish and wish—will it to happen—telling myself that if I want it badly enough, it’ll happen. I start to count backward, focusing on the pattern and rhythm of the numbers, and after a few minutes, numbness swallows my heart. Just like I wanted, my surroundings fade and I can’t feel anything.

I fall to the floor, hitting it hard, but I can’t feel the pain.…

Quinton

I’m driving way too fast. I know that and I know I should slow down, but everyone’s complaining for me to hurry up and get them home. They’re worried we’re going to miss our curfew. Sometimes I wonder how I get myself into these kinds of messes. It’s not like it’s a big deal, but I’d probably be having a lot more fun if I was wasted with the rest of them, because it’s spring break and I should be having fun. I’m not a fan of being the designated driver, but I usually end up offering to be one, and now I’m stuck driving around a bunch of drunken idiots.

“Stop smoking in here.” I roll down the window as smoke begins to fill up the car. “My mom will smell it from a mile away, and then she’s not going to let me drive her car anymore.”

“Oh come on, Quinton,” my girlfriend, Lexi, pouts as she takes a deep drag off her cigarette, then extends her arm out the open window. “We’ll air it out.”

Shaking my head, I reach over with my free hand and snatch the cigarette from her. “No more smoking.” I hold the cigarette out my cracked window until the cherry falls off, then release the rest out into the night. It’s late, the road we’re driving on is windy and curves around a lake, and we haven’t seen a car in ages. It’s good, though, since everyone else in the car is underage and drunk out of their minds.

Lexi sticks out her lip and crosses her arms over her chest, slumping back in her seat. “You’re so boring when you’re sober.”

I press back a grin. We’ve been dating for a couple of years now, and she’s the only girl I’ve ever been with and can ever see myself being with. I know it sounds superlame and cheesy because we’re only eighteen, but I’m seriously going to end up marrying her.

Still pouting, she slides her hand up my thigh until she reaches my cock, then she gives it a good rub. “Does that feel good? Because I’ll keep doing it if you just let me smoke.”

I try not to laugh at her, because she’s wasted and it’ll probably piss her off, but it’s funny how annoyed she’s getting by my soberness. “And you’re feisty and pouty when you’re drunk.” I squirm as she hits the right spot and fight not to shut my eyelids. “But I’m still not going to let you smoke in the car.”

She rolls her eyes, draws her hand away from me, and glances in the backseat, where my cousin Ryder is making out with some guy she met at the party. Their hands are all over each other. I’m not a fan of hanging out with her, but she comes out to Seattle sometimes and stays with my grandma. Lexi and Ryder became best friends during one of her visits when they were about twelve, and they’ve been inseparable ever since, which is pretty much how I met Lexi.

When Lexi looks away, her nose is scrunched. “So gross.”

I decelerate the car for a sharp corner in the road. “Oh, don’t pretend like you don’t wish it was you and me back there.” I wink at her and she rolls her eyes. “You know you do.”

She sighs and lets her arms fall to her lap. “Yeah, right. If we were back there and I was trying to stick my tongue down your throat, you’d totally be like”—she makes air quotes— “‘Lexi, please, there are people in the front seat who can see us.’”

“You’re making me sound like an old man.” I flash a playful grin at her as I downshift the car and the engine roars. The road is getting windier, and I have to slow down.

“You kind of are.”

“Bullshit. I’m fucking fun as hell.”

“No, you’re nice as hell, Quinton Carter. You’re seriously like the nicest guy I know, but the most fun? I’m not sure…” A conniving look crosses her face as she taps her finger against her lip. “How about we find out?” Without taking her eyes off me, she rolls the window down the rest of the way. The wind howls inside and blows her hair into her face.

“What the hell?” Ryder says from the backseat, jerking her lips away from the guy’s, and plucks strands of her hair out of her mouth. “Lexi, roll up the damn window. I’m eating my own hair here.”

“So Mr. Fucking Fun as Hell,” Lexi says, with her eyes on me as she arches her back and moves her head toward the window. “Let’s find out just how fun you are.”

I don’t like where she’s going with this. She’s too drunk, and even sober she’s always been a daredevil, impulsive and a little bit reckless. “Lexi, what are you doing? Get in here. I don’t want you to get hurt.”

A lazy smile spreads across her lips as she sticks her head farther out the window. The pale glow of the moon hits her chest and makes her skin look ghostly against the darkness. “I want to see just how fun you are, Quinton.” She extends her arms above her head as she slides up onto the windowsill. “I want to see how much you love me.”

“Quinton, make her stop,” Ryder says, scooting forward in the seat. “She’s going to hurt herself.”

“Lexi, stop it,” I warn, gripping onto the steering wheel with one hand and reaching for her with my other. “I love you and that’s why I need you to get down. Right now.”

She shakes her head. I can’t see her face or if she’s not holding onto anything. I have no idea what the hell she’s doing or thinking, and I’m pretty sure she doesn’t, either, and it’s fucking terrifying.

“If you’re so fun, then just let me be free,” she calls out. Her dress is blowing up over her legs and her feet are tucked down between the seat and the door.

Ryder lifts her leg to climb over into the front seat, but smacks her head on the roof and falls back. Shaking my head, I gently tap on the brakes as I lean over in the seat to grab Lexi. My fingers snag the bottom of Lexi’s dress and that’s when I hear the scream. Seconds later, the car is spinning out of control, and I don’t know what’s up or what’s down. Shards of glass fly everywhere and cut at my arms and face as I try to hold onto Lexi’s dress. But I feel the fabric leave my fingers as I’m jarred to the side. Everyone is screaming and crying as metal crunches and bends. I see bright lights, feel the warmth of blood as something slashes through my chest.

“Quinton…,” I hear someone whisper, but I can’t see who it is. I try to open my eyes, but it feels like they’re already open, yet all I see is darkness.

But maybe that’s better than seeing what’s actually there.…

Sins & Authors – Interview with Jenn Cooksey

Sins & Authors*flails* EEEP! Tomorrow Shooting Scars releases (hell, maybe it’ll even come out at midnight!). Today I’m talking to the hilarious Jenn Cooksey (quack), author of the beloved Grab Your Pole Series. If you’re a fan of Sins & Needles OR her series, you’re going to want to read this. Also, major props to something in S&N that she deems the best sentence she’s ever read. More props to how a 13-year old genius would fool Javier using knowledge of the TV show Supernatural. Just….keep reading.

KH: Give us three words to describe Sins & Needles.

JC: Fast, Dark, Sexy

KH: Give us three words to describe Ellie, Camden, Javier

JC:  Ellie: Desperate, Calculating, Abused

Camden: Embittered, Cunning, Eclectic

Javier: Unrepentant, Debauched, Delusional

KH: Your favorite scene in Sins & Needles

JC: Hands down it was the backyard barbeque scene. However, probably not for the same reason the rest of the down and dirty crowd got all moist reading it, although it was admittedly hot AF. It’s my favorite simply because “You can almost hear the concentration when a man is trying to put one of those on.” is not only one of life’s undeniable truths, but it also might just be one of the best sentences I’ve ever read. (Oh and for all of you who squirmed and grimaced in distaste at my word choice in this answer, that was payback to Megan from Reading Books Like A Boss. She knows what she did.)

KH: Moist..it had to be that word. But thank you, I do think men putting on condoms should be filmed or something, all the sweat on their brow as they concentrate. So, aside from that, why should people read this book?

JC: Like strip malls, there’s something for everyone in Sins & Needles; action, passion, life lessons, sweet rides (interpret that however you wish), humor, second chances, love, betrayal, surprises, consequences, the occasional f-bomb, good music, secrets, uber-flawed and relatable characters, intensity, mobile art, redemption and so much more. And, it’s extremely well written.

KH: Camden just caught you trying to rob him – what would you say to talk yourself out of the situation?

JC: Honestly, I’d probably tell him the truth; that I just wanted to see if I was good enough to do it. Plus, if the repercussions are being handcuffed by Camden even if he’s dangerously unstable at the time and demonstrating a possible break from reality…? Well, I’m just sayin’, I’d probably get caught on purpose. And don’t you judge me either.

KH: No judging here! How would your character Jillian (Camie’s younger sister) handle the situation if Javier suddenly showed up at her door, looking for Camie?

JC: I imagine it might go down something like this: Jillian, wearing her oversized t-shirt with the words “The Second Amendment” printed above a picture portraying a man with hairy bear arms, opens the door and immediately recognizing the swarthy and wholly unattractive sociopath standing before her, she raises a somewhat bored and supercilious eyebrow in question. The Psych—er…Javier opens his mouth to ask for Camie when Jillian interrupts him by saying, “So, Eric Kripke is not only bringing back Bobby, but the yellow-eyed demon, Azazel, too. Well, Sam and Dean aren’t here, nor is Castiel, but I imagine you’ll have no problem finding any of them on the CW when season eight of Supernatural airs this fall. If your business with any of the numerous and vastly more palatable cast members is pressing and can’t wait until October, I suggest flipping through past scripts or checking out Netflix and watching previous episodes. Yellow Fever and The Mystery Spot are two of my favorites, although you’re not in either, which only makes them that much more enjoyable.” Then she’d either shut the door in his dumbfounded face or stare at him and through his soul until he uncomfortably wriggles his shoulders and leaves, having no comeback whatsoever to the thorough insult made by a rather scary in her own right, thirteen-year-old genius.

KH: Yeah…pretty sure Javier would turn around and walk. Let’s say Camie has started doing cons…what kind of con would she pull?

JC: Well, Camie is nowhere near conniving or duplicitous enough to pull off any kind of complex con really, but as long as no one actually put their hands, mouth, or other bits on her, I could maybe see Camie partnering with Tristan to pull a kind of scam as seen in the movie Derailed where a “married” woman begins an almost-affair with a married man (the mark) and then the two are caught with their pants down and assaulted by an unknown assailant who not only robs the pair right then and there, but he then turns around and blackmails the mark (who was convinced by the woman to not go to the police because their spouses would find out about the affair, obviously) so his cheating ass doesn’t lose his wife and family, whom the blackmailer is also now threatening the lives of, unbeknownst to them of course. The married woman even goes so far as to tell the schmuck she’s pregnant and he of course, being the stupid fuck he is, gives her cash for an abortion so her “husband” won’t find out, because you know, she and her husband haven’t had sex in MONTHS so if she got knocked up out of the blue, he’d know she’d cheated on him. The unknown assailant is actually the supposed married woman’s con-counterpart, who she might or might not actually be married to; I can’t remember that detail of the movie at the moment tho—Wait, what was the question?

KH: *closes mouth* Moving on! Tristan has a choice…he can join a rescue mission to Mexico or he can join a cartel. What would he choose?

JC: Tristan has a teeny problem with drugs and wearing anything even close to resembling a suit (which he’d say is requisite for being in a cartel), and he’s a control freak too, probably making him not the best team player in an organized crime ring, so as long as he could dress accordingly, which in his mind is the obligatory sombrero and poncho—two things he happens to already possess so bonus points—he’d totally go with the rescue mission to Mexico. Plus, he can look for an authentic mariachi band while he’s there to play the wedding Camie is planning, so more bonus points.

KH: Tell people who Jillian, Camie and Tristan are and how they all come together in your series, Grab Your Pole.

JC: You know, Karina, I really kinda hated you for asking some of these questions because brevity clearly isn’t my thing even in a simple interview, but goddamn it, my verbose AF self simply cannot answer this one succinctly—as if most of my other answers can be classified as anything other than word vomit, right? I know, I know…I’m a word whore. So, sorry everyone, but this is all Karina’s fault, really. Oh and you might wanna go potty and then grab a snack (or booze) and get comfy…

Camie is your average teenage girl except that she’s been homeschooled her entire life and thus doesn’t have the same life experiences that most of her peers have had the opportunity to accrue. She’s smart, sarcastic and feisty, she possesses a natural beauty that she hasn’t allowed to go to her head, she’s adept at standing up for herself—although sometimes she needs a shove to do so—she has an irrational fear of looking stupid; something fate and the cosmos instigate frequently, and she has a quirk of hearing songs and seeing clips from movies and TV in her head. Camie adores Buffy the Vampire Slayer and her relationship with Tristan is only rivaled by her love affair with Bacon.

Jillian is Camie’s little sister. Camie has said that if you want to know what Jillian will look like when she’s sixteen, just picture Malibu Barbie. Tristan however can be quoted saying this about her: “Jillian is many things. She’s intimidating as hell for one thing and yeah, I have no problem admitting that a thirteen-year-old girl occasionally scares the shit out of me. Of course, her sister has a similar effect on me; only Camie doesn’t do it on purpose. Jillian carries herself with something like poetic grace; however, for those of us who have any sense of self-preservation, well, we recognize that poem to be taken from Bradbury’s story Something Wicked This Way Comes.” She’s a certified genius. She owns a real broadsword. She doesn’t text.shark

What you see is what you get does not apply to Tristan. He is a legend in his own time and has made himself the embodiment of what most every female desires, regardless of her age. Readers have called him a nautical god and a gorgeous behemoth with a penis, he’s rumored to be a man-whore by other characters in the series, and he himself has adopted the title of recently reformed promiscuous reprobate, although his mother believes him to be a consummate hopeless romantic. He’s capricious and admittedly egotistical, too, but he doesn’t show the masses what he’s really made of underneath his gloriously tanned and muscled hide. So while Tristan may appear completely unattainable and elusive, he is in truth, an inherently deep and complex individual.

In the Grab Your Pole series the three’s worlds collide when Camie and Jillian move from Arizona to California and their mother has to give up homeschooling them due to having breast cancer. Camie suddenly finds herself being the uncertain new girl when she’s thrown head first into public high school without knowing a soul outside of her family, none of who initially attend the same school as she. Through a series of seemingly fortuitous and often hilarious situations that arise, Camie and Tristan both find themselves in uncharted waters time and again. The chemistry between them is undeniable and many times, explosive. And like the wrath of wind and rain, both of them are forces to be reckoned with, the most destruction being done when they’re reckoning with each other.

Sins & Authors – Interview with Rebecca Espinoza

Sins & Authors Two more days till Shooting Scars! I’m quite le excited! To celebrate and to cap off your weekend, we’ve got the fabulous Rebecca Espinoza here, author of Binds (I have my own personalized copy, so happy!). Rebecca and I have a serious heart to heart about whether Javier truly loves Ellie or not, and if Uncle Jim had it coming. Also, lots of Camden love up in here ❤ OH and I gave her an exclusive Shooting Scars teaser (see bottom of post)

KH: What strikes you as the most interesting aspect of The Artists Trilogy – what do you think about a lot having read Sins & Needles? What gripped you?

RE: The most interesting aspect is how cinematic it feels. I was lucky enough to beta read Sins and Needles and I remember just feeling this thrill of excitement about it. I could imagine everything as if I was watching a movie, it just felt so real. The characters are fleshed out and impressively flawed and there is never a lull. It’s a perfect mix of action, romance, and adventure and I’ve never read anything like it.

KH: Can you relate to our immoral heroine Ellie Watt, why or why not?

RE: The immorality, not really. I’m the kind of person who gets shaky if a cop is just driving behind me. I was arrested in high school once for ditching and I almost pissed myself. No kidding. Since then, cops make me nervous so I tend to stay on the straight and narrow. I do relate to her body confidence issues with her scars and think that she’s not a bad person. She’s just someone who has been dealt a shitty hand by a crooked dealer. I don’t blame her for hiding aces in her sleeve. Under the circumstances, maybe I’d have done the same.

KH: I agree. Without spoiling too much – did Uncle Jim have it coming?

RE: Yes. It sounds terrible, but I just have no sympathy for him. You make a deal with the Devil…what do you expect?

KH: Good point! Do you think Javier, our obsessive drug lord, really loves Ellie or not? Give reasons to support this (LOL this sounds like a high school examine!)

RE: I don’t think Javier really knows what love is. I think he believes he loves her, but after some of the incidences in Shooting Scars, I think ultimately, Javier doesn’t love anyone more than his own self and his own revenge. That’s where Ellie and Camden differ. All of these characters have a chip on their shoulders, but I think that Ellie and Camden are able to find the strength to put love of another person above their love of revenge. Javier, not so much.

KH: Very wise thoughts there, Rebecca. If Camden could give you a tattoo, what would it be?

RE: I’m a collector of tattoos. Love them, but I’m really picky about who I let tattoo me. I think Camden could make the cut, though. I’d probably want him to finish up my sleeve. I have this beautiful picture of a woman caught in the rain that I want, so I’d definitely trust him to do it.

KH: Quick. You’ve done something bad and the police are coming. You have to flee. You’ve got Camden at one end of the house, Javier at the other and Ellie in the middle. Who do you run off with?

RE: Camden, without a doubt. I connect so much with his character because if someone is one of my people, I’ll defend them and do anything I can to help them, even if I don’t agree with everything they do. He’s proved that he’s the same way, more than once, so he’d be my choice. I wouldn’t even give it a second thought.

KH: A walk on the beach with Javier or mini golf and backyard BBQ with Camden?

RE: I’m a happily married woman. That being said, burnt steaks for the win.

KH: You’ve read Shooting Scars – give us a sentence on Gus

RE: Gus is an enigma. (I think I have him figured out, though.)

KH: You live in Hawaii…tell us the latest scandalous tale from the islands

RE: I’m a Haole (a white person) so I’m not really up on the latest island gossip. However, it’s funny that you ask this, I’m working on writing a book (in between the Binds series) that will feature a lot of insider info on Hawaii that most mainland Haoles aren’t privy to. The Hawaii Sovereignty Movement, which is a group that want Hawaii back from the United States will play a prominent role. Hawaii’s history is really fascinating, so I hope people will be interested in reading it.

bindsKH: I would loooove to read it. Your book Binds is urban fantasy and has gotten fabulous reviews – tell us a bit about it and what you have planned next

RE: Yeah, the good reviews have surprised the crap out of me. It’s been a trip. I’d describe Binds as dystopian light fantasy with magic, good vs. evil and a nice slow-burn romance. It’s basically about a woman who is more than she seems or has been made to believe her whole life. It’s also about her finding her own strength. She’s not as strong of a character as Ellie, to begin with, but she’s getting there. Next up I have a novella coming out from the Binds universe that is told from the POV of Jinx, the Mage’s resident techie. It’s called Jinxed and should be out really soon.

Rebecca Espinoza

Sins & Authors – Interview with Kimberly Stedronsky

Sins & AuthorsHope you’re all having a fabulous weekend. Thanks for continuing to read these interviews, me and the awesome authors really appreciate it! Today we have Kimberly Stedronsky, author of the Roam Series and the upcoming novel Eighth Note, which I can’t wait to read. Seriously she let me know a little bit about it and all I can say is GIMME GIMME NOW!!!

Welcome Kimberly! Now, in your own words describe what Sins & Needles is all about

Sins & Needles is about Ellie Watt’s determination to begin a new life while leaving behind a past of trauma and heartache. She runs into Camden McQueen again by chance, barely recognizing the dark, disturbed boy she once knew from her childhood. Hardened by life, Ellie decides to target Camden and his tattoo business as her next con. Camden won’t let her get away with it, and then realizes that he doesn’t want to let her get away at all. The past surfaces, shit hits the fan, and Camden is just so hot… oh, sorry, I got distracted. And Ellie is faced with a decision that will change both her and Camden’s lives.

Time to ask the serious questions  – Ellie finds herself being sucked into the past by two different men. Discuss what Javier represents to her and what Camden represents.

Javier represents protection. He is a dangerous outlet for her, relieving her of the fear of a life on the run, and numbing her from thinking about the consequences of revenge.

Camden represents survival, the future, and finally coming to terms with a past that has haunted her throughout her entire life. He was her first friend, her first love, and acknowledged her when no one else would.

Which man is better for Ellie?

Gus. Hands down. She needs this father figure in her life to accept her for who she is and to encourage her to heal. Then Camden, of course. Javier, you’re pretty slick, but you scare the shit out of me. Please go away.

Was not expecting that answer but I love it! Team Gus! Do you think it’s possible for all characters to find redemption? What would they need to do?

They can all find redemption. No one is born good or evil, but have the equal capacity to do both. They must forgive their own faults, and the wrongs that have been committed against them.

That being said, Javier should go in on a suicide mission to fuck Travis up something fierce, relieving Ellie from the suffering pain of revenge. Ellie will be Camden’s future, keeping his rage at bay and reciprocating his unconditional acceptance.

Also, Camden should pretty much be shirtless throughout all of Bold Tricks. I know it’s finished, but there is still time for edits to make this happen. FYI.

Mmmm I could make that happen! You’re on the run from the law – what crime did you commit? What is your getaway car? And what’s your new name?

I’m a pretty straight arrow- unless you mess with my kids. Then I’m balls-out going to end you. My getaway car would absolutely be my powder blue minivan, complete with my lame-o stick figure family and volleyball magnet. Add a car seat and I’m practically invisible to police. My name would be Kristy Swanson, because OG Buffy was my hero in high school.

Favorite scene in Sins & Needles?

My favorite scene in Sins & Needles is a quiet one. Ellie is mourning, and she and Camden go to the cabin at the campgrounds. They talk, they make love, and it’s really just such a turning point in the way Ellie feels about Camden. She admits to herself that she may end up loving him. I love that little oasis in the storm of all the crazy that is happening to her.

You’ve read Shooting Scars…what can readers expect?

Without giving anything away, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll hide your eyes and read between your fingers (holy shit that tattoo gun. Eff.) You’ll ride along with Ellie and Camden as they make decisions based on feelings, emotions, and survival. If you don’t agree, you’ll at least relate. Best ending ever- so excited for Bold Tricks!

Tell me more about your series, Roam…what makes it stand out from other new adult books out there?

The Roam Series is awkwardly hanging out in new adult, even though the fans I’ve met range from fourteen to eighty-six. Roam is a paranormal time-travel romance.

The story begins with Roam Camden, a seventeen-year-old girl who discovers that her high school history teacher, West Perry, has been searching for her throughout lifetimes. There is a prophecy, revenge, history, reincarnation, unrequited love, rape, sarcasm, sex, an evil king, magic, monsters, music, time travel, suspense, sadness, blood, carnage… and, of course… true, undying love. In no particular order.

The series follows Roam from seventeen to thirty-seven, and ultimately explains why the prophecy was cast thousands of years ago. It stands out in new adult because it’s really not. It’s a story with a little of every genre. The only thing missing are brooding vampires and hot, tatted street fighters. I’ll try to work those into my next book. J

Eighth Note (Fire Ballad One) is a new, standalone horror series featuring Eva and Will from the Roam Series, coming Halloween 2013.

Can’t wait, you know me and my freaky mind, I’m going to be all over that book!

Sins & Authors – Interview with Misty Provencher

Sins & Authors Okay this is a pretty awesome Friday. You know why? Cuz I’m hear with the hilarious Ima-Onya Son…er, Misty Provencher, author of the beloved Cornerstone Series (I’m proud to say I have this on my Kindle before I even knew who she was! Yep, highly recommended, folks). Anyway, Misty and I get down to brass tacks and discuss anti-heroes and belly-button tattoos. And man harems. Yes, Misty sure a screw loose but that’s why we love her. In fact, I may just team up with her and pull a con on Ellie Watt. Don’t tell her, mmmk?

KH: Welcome Misty! So, I’m curious…you only recently came across Sins & Needles – what possessed you to pick it up?

MP: Actually, I was inspecting your font, you crafty girl. I had used a similar font on a cover I was working on and your font caught my eye. Then I was like, WHAT A COOL TITLE, DAMN DAMN DAMN, I SHOULDA THOUGHT OF THAT…WHY WHY WHY LORD??

And the cover was rockin and I got busy kicking myself over that and then I read the blurb. After that I was all like Joey on Friends, like…Hey, Sins & Needles, aka awesome looking book with the cool blurb…how you doin’? And BLAM! I bought the book.

KH: My cover artist, Naj, came up with that. I LOVE the cover too! So, describe our heroine Ellie Watt in one sentence. Do it now. Do it! *shakes fist*

MP: Ellie Watt. The girl is real. I loved her complexity, actually. I thought you were artful as hell the way Ellie wasn’t a saint and ended up a slightly redeemed sinner. Almost. I can’t say much without giving away, so I won’t. But I might just be calling you The Artful Dodger, Ms. Karina. Well done.

KH: I could used more nicknames. All right. Next question. There are no heroes in this series, only anti-heroes. True or false? Discuss

MP: Anti-heroes, true. But I think that when you understand anybody’s motives and perspective–really understand it–there aren’t any criminals. There are monkey wrenches and elbow pipes and patch jobs, but not really any criminals. That’s what I enjoyed about this story and your subsequent book. You gave us perspectives and sorted out the tool box, ran us through the pipes so we understood why things went the way they did. I loved that.

KH: If you were alone on a deserted island with Camden or Javier, what would you do?

MP: Alone on a deserted with Cam & Javie? I’d keep those boys on opposite sides of the island and visit them like sister wives. I’d have myself a little hot-boy harem. I mean, I’m assuming I’m not married and normal and shiz in this scenario, yes?

KH: But of course! If you had to get a tattoo from Camden, what would it be?

MP: I’d have him tattoo his social security number on my belly button. So I could track his butt down whenever I wanted. Ya know, I’m filling this out a little late at nightish…I don’t think I’m usually this stalkeratzi, but then again, you said Camden, right?

KH: Hey, nothing wrong with stalking. If you had to pull a con with Ellie, what con would you pull?

MP: Easy. I’d steal both those boys away from her. It couldn’t be a long con though. I’d have to get down to it. Heh heh heh (Wow. Later it gets, the more letchy I get. *sigh*)

KH: I could help you with that! OK. If you had to pull a con on Javier, what would your alias be and could you see yourself sleeping with the enemy?

MP: A con on Javier? Sure. My alias would be Ima Onya-Sun. A nice orientalish name to throw him off. Wait, that wasn’t the objective in this con, was it. Rats. The objective to my con would BE to sleep with the enemy. Have you read that guy’s stats? *looks at Karina’s audience* I mean, seriously. Don’t tell me you all have read those stats and aren’t thinking of snagging that boy’s virtue too ~ eh hem.

KH: Oh, they’ve all thought of it. We have the Cornerstone series, Gargoyle and Hale Mare, what are you writing next?

MP: I’m finishing up the final book (CAPSTONE) in the Cornerstone Series right now, working on another Gargoyle book AND (yaaaaaaaaahooo) I got a bizaree sci-fi-fantasy-whoop-whoop book coming at you early next year. Thank you for asking and thanks for having me over to blah blah with you, Karina! I’ve really enjoyed your work!

KH: Well thank YOU for blah blahing with me, Misty. And hello, lemme at this sci-fi-fantasy-whoop-whoop book! Who doesn’t love a good whoop whoop book?

Sins & Authors – Interview with Joanna Wylde

Sins & Authors
Five days, five days, five days! The countdown to Shooting Scars is dwindling, folks! In the meantime, check out this interview I did with the talented Joanna Wylde. She talks about her alias (very funny *narrows eyes*), flawed characters AND a lot about her research that went into the hit Reaper’s Property and her upcoming book in the Reapers MC, Reaper’s Legacy, including her favorite scene (it involves losing your virginity with a douchebag, so you know you’ll want to read that).

KH: Hello Joanna! For those who haven’t read The Artists Trilogy, can you explain what it’s about and why they should read it?

JW: One of the great things about your writing, Karina, is that is doesn’t fit neatly into the types of categories we usually use to define romance novels. You always go bigger, and the Artists Trilogy definitely takes romance to a new level.

Sins and Needles introduces us to three very complex characters – Ellie Watt (a young grifter), Camden McQueen (a high school friend of hers who always loved her), and Javier Bernal (a Mexican gangster who was once her boyfriend). Their story starts when Ellie returns to her home town after running out of places to stay and people to con. She reunites with Camden, sparks fly, and dysfunction takes over.

That description doesn’t begin to do it justice, though. Like so many of my favorite books, Sins and Needles is really driven by strong characterization. The plot may be complex and satisfying, but watching Ellie grow from a woman who exists only to steal from others into a person capable of deep sacrifice was compelling. I can’t wait to see what comes next in the series.

KH: If you had to choose for yourself, would you pick tortured tattoo-artist Camden McQueen or psychopathic, sexy drug lord Javier Bernal? Is your choice any different from whom you think Ellie should end up with?

JW: If I had to choose for myself, I think I’d run away from both of them as fast as I could! Camden and Javier are sexy as hell, but to say they have baggage isn’t nearly strong enough. Javier is incredibly compelling to me because I always go for the bad guy in a book. And he’s unapologetically bad – a criminal who isn’t looking for redemption, at least not so the reader can see in Sins and Needles. I like that because it’s honest and in your face.
Camden is physically sexy and a tough in his own right, but I think for now I’ll stick with Javier. That could change, though. Cam isn’t exactly weak or innocent himself. And physically? Holy shit, he’s hot.

KH: Name one redeeming quality about each character and one terrible flaw

JW: Well, I don’t want to give away spoilers, so I’d suggest that if your readers haven’t read the book, they skip over this answer.

When we meet Ellie, she’s nothing but flaws. She’s a liar and a thief who sees an innocent man she’s wronged in the past and immediately decides to wrong him again. But as the story progresses, her conscious kicks in and by the end she’s literally willing to give up everything to protect a helpless child. Her sacrifice and innate sense of morality is a complete turnaround for her character, and it’s done in a believable way. That’s some serious redemption.

Camden is the complete opposite. He starts out as the nice guy and then we learn that he’s actually a ruthless criminal in his own right, fully capable of manipulating and using Ellie in his quest for freedom. His flaw is that he’s weak and has let himself get into a terrible situation. His strength? I think ultimately he’s a good man.

Javier is one big flaw – he’s a bad person who does terrible things. Ellie may be his redemption? He’s obsessed with her, although we won’t find out how that obsession plays out until the next book. I’m really excited to see how it goes, I have to admit.

KH: Javier is one big flaw…I love it. Favorite scene in Sins & Needles?

JW: I’ll give another spoiler alert before answering this one. My favorite scene is definitely when Camden catches Ellie trying to steal from him. He turns from an attractive but relatively simple character into a dangerous and powerful man in about three sentences, and it blew me away. I didn’t see it coming – up to that point, I felt like he was a victim. Then he wasn’t.

KH: “Gotcha”- loved writing that scene. What would happen if your character from Reaper’s Property, Horse, took Ellie out on a date?

JW: He wouldn’t, because he’d never cheat on Marie. She’s way too good with a gun.

KH: What would happen if Horse and Javier fought?

JW: Well, Horse is definitely a physical character and he’s bigger than Javier, so I think he’d win a straight up fight. But I doubt it would get that far – I think it’s far more likely they’d size each other up and then start talking business…

KH: Reaper’s Property was a wonderful hit and you did a lot of research to get the MC life just right – can you tell us an interesting story or tidbit you discovered by investigating?

JW: Like you, I started out in journalism. When I decided to write a book set in a motorcycle club, it was all about the research. I read everything I could get my hands on and then – because reading can only take you so far – I started talking to guys who are actually in clubs. They represent a huge, vibrant subculture of incredibly interesting people. They’ve created their own alternative world operating right next to ours, but it’s below the radar for most of us. Diving into that was… eye-opening…

(Disclaimer time: It’s important to note that while many outlaw clubs have members who are involved in illegal activities, that isn’t the main reason an outlaw club exists. They share a love for riding, a desire for freedom from society’s rules, and a sense of brotherhood that’s incredibly strong. One size doesn’t fit all and it’s completely unfair to make sweeping generalizations about an entire culture – positive or negative – based on the actions of a few. For the record, I didn’t talk to anyone about illegal activities, and if I’d asked, nobody would have told me anything anyway. I’m an outsider and club members keep their business private.)

Having made that disclaimer, while I was writing Reaper’s Property, something happened that really knocked me on my ass. There was a public shooting of some men connected to one of my club contacts. I watched the story play out as reporters got hold of it. This is where I truly saw just how many different ways there are to interpret a single event, and how complex reality can be. Prejudice against the club in question was strong enough to color the coverage significantly, and there was a definite sense that the victims brought it on themselves. The facts of the case – as determined by the police – didn’t support this, yet that never made it into the papers.

Up to this point, I hadn’t really questioned what I’d heard about clubs over the years. I assumed they were criminals, and we all know that criminals who get killed made their choices, and we usually don’t feel much sympathy. This incident taught me that I couldn’t assume what I read is real and unbiased. News about clubs is presented in a very simplistic way. Reality is rarely that simple.

My view of the MC world has gotten even more nuanced since the book came out. For example, I’m gaining a far stronger understanding of women’s roles within clubs and their motivations every day. When I wrote the book, it was easy to find guys to visit with (big surprise here – men like talking to women who write stories full of sex!). Now I hear from women in clubs who have read the book, and their insights (good and bad) are fascinating. I’m so thankful to those who have been willing to talk to me and share their stories. The world of outlaw MCs is very private and I feel privileged to have been offered so many glimpses of a reality that very few non-club members ever get to see.

KH: Tell me what Reaper’s Legacy is about and if you have a favorite scene from that book?jw

JW: Reaper’s Legacy is the second book in my series about the Reapers MC, a fictional club set in my hometown of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. It’s a follow up to Reaper’s Property and has many of the same characters, but is a stand-alone book. Here’s the blurb:

“Eight years ago, Sophie gave her heart—and her virginity—to Zach Barrett on a night that couldn’t have been less romantic or more embarrassing. Zach’s step-brother, a steely-muscled, tattooed biker named Ruger, caught them in the act, getting a peep show of Sophie he’s never forgotten.

“She may have lost her dignity that fateful night, but Sophie also gained something precious—her son Noah. Unfortunately, Zach’s a deadbeat dad, leaving Ruger to be Noah’s only male role model. When he discovers Sophie and his nephew living in near poverty, Ruger takes matters into his own hands—with the help of the Reapers Motorcycle Club—to give them a better life.

“Living with outlaw bikers wasn’t Sophie’s plan for her son, but Ruger isn’t giving her a choice. He’ll be there for Noah, whether she wants him or not. But Sophie does want him, has always wanted him. Now she’ll learn that taking a biker to bed can get a girl dirty in every way…”

I think my favorite scene in the book is in the prologue, where we have the heroine lose her virginity. I’ve gotten so sick and tired of these romances where there is this perfect, virginal heroine who has seventeen orgasms as she breathlessly makes love for the first time with a duke or a prince or whatever. So I wrote a scene that was realistic – Sophie loses her virginity on a dirty couch to a douchebag kid, and while it kind of sucks, it doesn’t ruin her life or brand her as a whore. I enjoyed writing it, and I think readers are going to enjoy something that’s gritty and real and kind of funny.

KH: Last but not least, if you were on the run from the law, what would it be for, where would you hide-out and what would your alias be?

JW: Seeing as I haven’t ruled out a future crime spree, I’d be crazy to share my plans for going on the run and hiding out… As for an alias? I’m sort of leaning toward “Karina Halle.” I like the sound of it – classy and believable, and just scrappy enough to give it some color.

Thanks again for having me, Karina. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book.

Sins & Authors – Interview with CC Brown

Sins & Authors Well, for all your loco Javier fans, we have an author here who is just as loco over our obsessive drug lord, Javier. Today I’m talking to CC (Cindy) Brown, author of Red Flags, Shattered and the upcoming Fraternizing (which I can’t wait to read) and she opens her soul to discuss how on earth she went from loving Camden to loving Javier by reading Shooting Scars and why she never wants to be good. BAD GIRL!

KH: Describe Sins & Needles in one sentence. Do the same for On Every Street.

CB: Sins and Needles is a fast-paced, adrenaline pumping, page turner. On Every Street slows things down, making you appreciate the love machine that is Javier Bernal.

KH: You’ve read Shooting Scars (the sequel to Sins & Needles) and for some crazy reason you switched teams from hunky tattoo artist with a heart of gold, Camden, to possessive, manipulative, sex panther Javier. What is it about Javier that enthralls you so? Is it the sex panther thing? lol

CB: There is something about the possessive nature that comes across from Javier. He is sexy, he’s confident, and he knows how to fuck. I felt him in this book. He pulled me in, wrapped me up, and didn’t let me go. And even though I know he is a bad guy, sometimes you just don’t want to be good… and if Javier is what I get when I go bad, then I’m never going to be good again.

KH: If you could have the perfect date with Javier, where would you go and what would you do?
It would be something with water. I love water, so he could take me to his beach house in Mississippi, or down to Mexico. I don’t really care. As long as I can be in water with him, naked, and letting him have his way with me, I’m down.

KH: If you were on the run from the law, what would it be for, what would your new alias be and where would you go?

CB: I’m a pretty law abiding citizen, so this is a tough one. My patience is quite thin, so maybe I beat the hell out of someone and they didn’t make it. I’d definitely leave the country, I wouldn’t stay here. Christine Kirkwood would leave the U.S.

KH: Hey there you go, a new pen name! Sexiest scene in On Every Street/Sins & Needles?

CB: Hands down, when Javier takes Eden’s virginity. Most times, when you hear about virgins losing it in a book, the guy just jumps in there and fucks her, a few pounds and that’s that. Javier, the Latin Lover, took his time, set up the room, coached her, then had his way with her. He didn’t just take it, he allowed her to enjoy it as well. Then he helped her afterwards. Loved it.

In Sins and Needles, it would have to be when Camden gave Ellie the tattoo. There was no intercourse here, but the act was so intimate and full of love.

KH: Casting time! Cast actors to play Ellie, Javier and Camden (give me some pictures too!)

CB: Ellie- Amber Heard
Javier- Alex Gonzales
Camden- M. Shadows

cindys image

KH: I am SUPER excited for your upcoming book, Fraternizing. Your female MC sounds like a badass and you know how I love badass girls. Tell me about the book and why you decided to write it?

CB: Fraternizing is military forbidden love story. For readers who don’t know much about the military, freedoms that are granted to everyday civilians are not always granted to service members. In the military, Fraternizing is a huge deal. Careers can be lost because of it, with dishonorable discharges that follow you for life.

In my story, Sgt. Alex Cruz is an instructor at the Marine Corps Communications School and he, unknowingly, falls for one of his students, a new Marine, Pfc. Cassie Bennett. They both know that they cannot lawfully pursue anything with one another, but sometimes your attraction is stronger than the rules and regulations. They end up embarking on a scandalous, secretive, relationship, having to duck and hide, hoping they are not found out.

My husband is a U.S. Marine and he was once a Comm School instructor. Fraternizing is nothing new, it happens, and people lose a lot because of it. I wanted to write this because it deals with Marines, which I am around on a daily basis. The hiding, the secrecy, and the scandal that naturally fit into a story like this seemed like it would make for an interesting read.

I can’t wait until you get the chance to read it

KH: Forbidden love and military. What is not to love? (Fraternizing comes out in October with a cover reveal on August 26th – I’ve seen the cover – LOVE IT)

CC Brown
Just a book reading, writing loving, mommy and USMC wife! 🙂

I love to write, even if it isn’t what is conventional and makes everyone feel giddy inside. I usually pull from dreams, or ideas that just thrust themselves into my head. I have what some would describe as a dry sense of humor, and I think its conveyed in my writing. I like to think I am a kick ass chick, but I can also be sensitive. I’m learning to grow thick skin, and in this field, it is definitely needed!
I won’t put anything out that I am not absolutely proud of, but like E.L. James said, “I can’t own people’s reactions to it.” Thanks for reading my work… I do appreciate it!

Sins & Authors – Interview with MJ Abraham

Sins & Authors

Happy Tuesday! Seven days until Shooting Scars! I’m so excited I can barely contain myself! Hence all the exclamation marks! Yay! Today we have the wonderful author MJ Abraham talking with us about tats, second chances and she even throws in a little Lost reference.

KH: MJ! Welcome to this piece of cyberspace! Okay, first question… well, request: Tell people why they need to read Sins & Needles. Tell them why they need to read On Every Street.

MA: Sins & Needles is captivating and well written. A story that will show you love, loss, heartache, flawed characters, finding strength in the face of fear and the cost of redemption. On Every Street is an awesome companion and adds more depth and character development. Plus, it’s $.99 – cheaper than coffee and will last you longer. BUY IT NOW.

KH: You should sell used cars! I like your pitch. Now, Ellie Watt is a difficult heroine for female readers to like – why do you like Ellie?

MA: For all the bad that she’s done, you see enough redeeming qualities throughout the trilogy. Yes she’s made bad decisions but she’s also been punched into the ground time and time again. Sometimes you want to get up and punch back. Hard.

KH: If you could go on a date with Camden, where would you go and what would you do?

MA: I’d take him to a private beach in Florida. He’d surf while I watch his delicious abs and plan when I’m going to kiss every inch of his body. Then we’d have sex on the beach (literally, not the drink), then he’d cook me something on the grill, and we’d have more sex – in the backyard. There won’t be any neighbors. Oh yeah.

KH: Tell me about Javier’s appeal

MA: Eh. I’m Team Camden. But I will say Javier has a way with words, which is where he guts me every. damn. time. That bastard.

KH: He is a bastard, I’ll give him that. Love to hate him. If you were on the run for something, what would it be for, what would your alias be, and what would your getaway car be?

MA: If I was on the run it better be for something fucking epic. I’d join Ocean’s Eleven and rob a casino. My name would change to Avery “Freckles” Sawyer

KH: Now that you have a new name and car, what would you do in your new life and where would you be living?

MA: I’d live in Greece and die happy eating their food. Opa!

KH: I wanna come!!! If Camden could give you a tattoo, what would it be?

MA: After our sexcapade date, he’d give me more than one <3. I'd have a small cross on my right ankle, a music note behind my ear, a latin quote on my back 'Alis Volat Propriss' (she flies with her own two wings), and I may or may not want quotation marks on each wrist.

KH: I love that, seriously. Your series A Second Chance, deals with, well, second chances. The Artists Trilogy does too – tell me your thoughts on second chances.

MA: I think we all have second chances in life and are all deserving of it. As humans, it’s natural to make mistakes. Not necessarily in love, it can be with anything – so long as we are living, we are given the chance to start fresh.

resp MJKH: You have a new book out called Resplendent (LOVE the cover so bad) – tell me all about Resplendent and how is it related to your previous book, Happenstance?

MA: Thanks 🙂 Happenstance is Victoria’s story and Resplendent is her brother’s, Andres’. You see both characters in each of them, they are both given the chance to start over, and they both show my latin culture. Otherwise, they are completely different stories. Resplendent is about a friendship that starts off in high school and the obstacles they overcome over the course of ten years. I’m a sucker for a friends to lovers story. Have I mentioned I’m Team Camden?

Sins & Authors – Interview with KT Grant (and Mho)

Sins & AuthorsGood morning. Yes, it’s Monday. But you know what that means? 8 days until Shooting Scars! And to celebrate we have author KT Grant with us AND she’s got a Shooting Scars teaser to share with y’all! I had the pleasure of meeting KT in NYC last month where we had some pretty awesome margaritas at Vinyl in Hell’s Kitchen…

me and kt

So, pull up a chair, make yourself a cup of coffee and get ready for one hell of an interview…because KT is NOT alone…

KH: Well, hello KT…seems you brought a little friend to the interview. Who is this rambunctious little sheep (I’ve had some drinks with him, but readers may not know)?

KT: This is Mho Fho, my demon sheep mascot who haunts my personal blog, Babbling About Books, and More. He’s been annoying me for 4 long years with his flirtatious and pervy ways.

Mho: *pushes KT aside* Yeah, I’m the best pervy flirt around! My harem of lovely ladies proves this.

KT: *smacks forehead and groans*
mho

KH: Oh, Mho. Well, both you and Mho can answer these questions! Okay, so what compelled you to pick up Sins & Needles?

KT: I first heard of Sins & Needles from a few of my blogging buddies, and since I’m always on the lookout for new books, I bought Sins & Needles. The cover and blurb really caught my eye. I read Sins & Needles in less than 48 hours and have reread it more times than I can count.

*shakes fist at Karina’s mad addicting writing skills*

Mho: The hot chick showing off her shoulder on the cover made me want to read. Also the psychedelic blue color of the cover made me loopy, but in a good way.

KT: *rolls eyes* Mho, you’re such a perv! Really, the cover model’s shoulder?

Mho: *Shrugs* I get turned on by naked shoulders. Since I don’t have drool worthy shoulders, I hunger for them.

KT: *Groans*

KH: Well, we all have our fetishes, am I right? OK, so Ellie Watt is a tough character for many female readers to like…why do you think that is?

KT: Ellie is a heroine who lives by her own rules and only looks out for herself. Some readers may think she’s selfish, but I admire Ellie because she’s had a rough life, but was able to survive through it all. She walks a fine line between wrong and right, but underneath it all, I think she’s s good person who’s been unlucky and stuck in some bad situations.

Mho: Ellie is a bad ass biotch with a takes no prisoner attitude. What’s not to love about Ellie? What I would love to do to Ellie is hop on her and –

KT: *slaps palm over Mho’s mouth* Ignore him.

Mho: *pushes aside KT’s hand* Before I was rudely interrupted, I was going to say, I would hop on Ellie and snuggle her, like a big warm hug. I’m very admired by my snuggling skills.

KH: Suuuuuuuure. KT, You’re Team Camden, I know that…but why do you think so many readers love Javier?

KT: Javier is an extremely sexy and powerful bad boy most readers can get hooked on. I can see his appeal, especially in the prequel, On Every Street. If I was in Ellie’s shoes, I would have been seduced by Javier also. I shiver when he calls her, angel. He’s such a devil *coughpsychocough* though.

Mho: I like Javier for his name.

KT: *looks at Mho oddly* That’s a strange answer. Why?

Mho: The name Javier means, “bright, new house” in Spanish. How can you not like a dude named after a house?

KH: Bahahaha. Well who doesn’t like a bright, new house? Albeit one filled with LIES. KT, if you had one night with Camden, describe it. Describe one night with Javier (this question is more for Kate, sorry Mho…unless you swing that way!)

KT: Oh, the things I could do with both of these men! But I’ll keep it PG-13. I’d love to watch Camden tattoo a few people (play with his tattoo gun *heh heh*) and then we would probably go play pool or to a bar and listen to live music. I’d want Javier to wine and dine me, and take me out dancing.

Mho: *jumps in* Don’t lie, KT! You’d snuggle both these dudes until they were a pile of mush the next morning.

KH: “snuggle” – so you’ve read Shooting Scars…can you tell readers what they are in for?

KT: Readers will want to hold onto their seats because Shooting Scars is a heart thumping, adrenaline rush. So many OMGWTFs will be pouring from readers’ mouths. Many will have their jaws dropping around their ankles and shocked in disbelief at what Ellie has to do to make it out alive. I can see some readers jumping ship from one team to another, but staying loyal to Ellie through it all.

KH: Same! If Camden could tattoo you, what tattoo would you get?

Mho: I’ll answer for KT! She would get a big fluffy tattoo of me on her back that says, KT and Mho 4-ever.

KH: If you were arrested, what would it be for?

KT: Probably for the silliest thing. I would go to an animal shelter and free all the cats and dogs from their cages and let them roam free. Is that something you can get arrested for?

Mho: I’d get arrested for sneaking into homes and raiding their panty and fridge for cookies and ice cream. KT is mean and doesn’t let me have sweets *pouts*.

KH: Tell me about your getaway car

KT: Mine would be the $1.4 million Ashton Martin One 77 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aston_Martin_One-77). The One-77 can reach up to 200mph and go 0-60 in under 4 seconds. It even has Matrix breaks, which just sounds cool because it’s like the movie, The Marix. Mho and I would burn some major rubber in this beauty.

KH: You’re a blogger/reviewer and an author. Tell me a bit about your career and how it all came about – you’ve put out so many books!

KT: I started reviewing books way back in 2002 on Amazon. In 2007 I began reviewing for a few review websites and then decided to start my own blog called Babbling about Books and More (kbgbabbles.com) in Fall of 2008. Blogging gave me the confidence to take my fiction I’ve been writing for personal fun and try and publish it. My first book, Lovestruck, a lesbian contemporary romance came out in June 2010, and since then I’ve published close to 25 works, ranging from short stories, to novellas and full length titles that encompasses both LGBT and Straight romance.

KH: 25 books! Amazing! You’re making the big step into self-pubbing with your fall release of The Gate. Tell people what that’s about!

KT: *Bites nails* Yes, I’m self publishing for the first time *pumps fist*! The Gate is the first book in the Dark Path series. It’s a BDSM erotic romance about a billionaire media mogul who also owns a BDSM club, and his attempt in seducing an author of a popular children’s book series. It takes place in New York City and is filled with a lot of passion, sexy times with kinkery going on, as well as mystery, and suspense. Everything you could want is in this book! The Gate’s tentative release date is October 15th.

Mho: I’ve read it and whoa baby, the book is so hot you can fry an egg on it! But it lacks the most important thing to make The Gate the best book of the year! It needs a cute cuddly sheep named Mho. *pokes KT* I expect to be in the second book!

KT: *bangs head against a wall*

Thank you KT…and Mho, of course! Now for a few fun things.

Here’s the official blurb and cover for KT’s book The Gate:

Gate CoverA chance encounter between a successful author and a billionaire owner of an underground BDSM club, leads to the most pivotal relationship of their lives…

Erika Walsh has carried a torch for Christopher Milton, heir to her father’s publishing empire for years. After one steamy make out session she begins to wonder if it might develop into something more. But when M. L. Crawford, better known as Max, her father’s publishing rival, seeks her out at a society event, she’s drawn to his magnetic charisma and powerful demeanor. Their verbal bantering and innuendo laced overtones stir feelings she never knew existed, and soon Erika is consumed with knowing the real man under Max’s restrained public façade.

Erika’s sweet nature and naivety excites Max to near madness. He wants to train her in the art of seduction and make her succumb to his every wish and command…as his perfect submissive. Yet, Christopher is determined to keep Erika from becoming the latest victim of Max’s sinister sexual hungers. He knows all too well what Max hides in his black soul and will stop at nothing to reveal all of Max’s secrets in order to protect the one thing he holds dear above all else- Erika.

Max’s dark desires scare yet arouse Erika, as he opens her eyes to a new bold world full of passion and ecstasy she never imagined until him. But the biggest question remains: Is Erika’s craving for Max just an illusion that transpires behind the walls of The Gate?
